Meet Mark Miller - Chief Projects and Capital Officer at H2 Green Steel

With four decades of experience in engineering and construction projects all over the world, Mark Miller is bringing a wealth of knowledge to the development of H2 Green Steel’s greenfield steel plant in Boden, northern Sweden. His expertise is centered around metals – primarily steel but also aluminum, chemical plants, and energy – with a deep understanding of the full value chain. As Chief Projects and Capital Officer at H2 Green Steel, Mark and his team are responsible for the establishment of the steel site, ensuring that all work is carried out safely, within budget and within schedule.

“This project is a challenging one, and the attraction of it, over and above the challenge, is the meaningfulness of taking a leadership position in the steel industry for environmental and social improvements,” he says.

Even though he had never been to Sweden before, Mark decided to take the job and relocate from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, with his wife. He says that the reason for his decision was the purpose of the project, underpinned by H2 Green Steel’s culture and values in combination with the opportunity to work with a highly experienced management team.

“I've been involved in a lot of steel projects and for many reasons, but never one that was driven by an environmental and social imperative.”

Asked why he thinks global talent should consider joining his team, Mark offers a definite answer.

“In this case you have to consider your head, career, drive, and interests, but also your heart. Working at H2 Green Steel needs to be attractive to you as a purpose, because we live and breathe these values. I think there are people who have worked hard to develop their talent and skills in industrial projects and want to employ them in a business, but also in an endeavor that has true environmental and social worth and impact. If you want to join a fantastic team and face challenges together in a culture of cooperation, you should consider looking at our open roles on our LinkedIn or website, and let us know you're interested.”

What kind of talent and skills are you looking for when hiring?

“We’re building a team with a culture of problem solving, and are looking for committed individuals with a can-do attitude. They could be of any skill or background that contributes to a major industrial project – from Greenfield projects and working for new or smaller companies, to steelmaking including mini mills, ironmaking, and hydrogen production of all disciplines. It’s pretty much any industrial discipline that you can think of. We need to build a very broad team and talent base, where the keys are experience with large industrial projects and some of our processes.”

Finally, what are the perks of relocating to Sweden?

“One thing that really surprised me was that it was pretty seamless to move here as an American. You hardly even know that you're in a city whose primary languages isn't English because everyone speaks it, so the barrier to moving is almost none. America is a friendly country, and while it's not like you stop and have conversations on the streets here, there is a culture of openness, acceptance, and friendliness. Swedes are extremely smart people, very well educated, and also very genteel in how they deal with people. I didn't really have any shocks; it's just been amazing to get to know the Swedish social culture.”
